Thanks to Steve Rhodes for the link to Poetry FAQ, BY Wendy MacLeod;
Why do people go to poetry readings?
Some go to get signed copies of books that may one day be worth something on eBay. Some go because it makes them look arty and deep. But most use poetry readings as a gentle, non-addictive sleep aid.
The incomparable Lance Mannion:
AP had a story the other day about Baby Boomers putting off retirement and reconciling themselves to having to work till they drop.
The story, by John Rogers, looked at some of the reasons behind this, although taking the usual business reporting tone of “These things happen, what are you going to do?” as if the financial collapse that wiped out retirement savings was an act of God and not the result of a massive act of collective theft, fraud, and criminal incompetence and as if there’s no government that could do anything to salvage things, which, effectively, there isn’t, but still.
I implore you to click through and read the rest of this rant. It’ll make you feel outraged and it’s about time.
Tom Eblen’s profile of Katerina Stoykova-Klemer of Accents Publishing:
Katerina Stoykova-Klemer already was a classic American success story.
Born in Bulgaria, she immigrated to the United States at age 24 with her young son and married her American pen pal, Daniel Klemer. She earned a bachelor’s degree in computer science, then a master’s in business administration. She became a software engineer for IBM, then a project manager for Lexmark International.Increasingly, though, she felt something was missing in her life.
What she was missing was poetry and the result of her quest to add it has been a great gift to Kentucky letters. Read the whole article to find out what a whirlwind she has created.
Speaking of gifts to Kentucky letters, last night’s celebration of Wind Publications was a great success. Ernie Stamper took some fine photos of the event, which you can view here.
