  1. What a song, and it still has the power to depress me 30 years later. I confess I went to a Randy Newman concert at UK in the mid 70s all by myself. I think I asked my beau at the time but he wouldn’t go since he’d never heard of Randy Newman. (His loss.) So I went and took 2 pints of whisky. One for me and one for Randy. I gave it to the roadie and told him to give it to Mr. Newman. I don’t know if he ever did. Always did love drinking whisky and playing Randy Newman albums. It probably drove my roommates nuts. Anyway, thanks for the trip down memory lane. I think I’ll go to bed now, do some light reading like Cormac McCarthy’s The Road.

  2. I’ll treasure the story, Normandi. Good to find another Newman fan. The poetry of this particular song is amazing, though it’s true. It’s dark.
