    From Amnesty International:

    STAY OF EXECUTION!!
The U.S. Supreme Court has stayed Troy Davis’ execution until Monday, September 29. You can read more here (PDF file).

Visit the Amnesty site for a list of actions that you can take.

Update: Received this e-mail from the ACLU:

Yesterday, in a dramatic turn of events, the United States Supreme Court saved Troy Daviss life just two hours before his scheduled execution.

His fate is now in the hands of the Supreme Court. Theyve stayed his execution. But, unless they now decide to hear his case, that stay will soon be lifted. And then only Georgia officials can stop his execution.

Troy Daviss case is far from unique. Sadly, it is a very public demonstration of what can go wrong when courts and legislatures use procedural barriers to block persuasive claims of innocence and other constitutional violations. And he is only one of the thousands of others on death row.

We must increase the public outcry. Write a letter to the editor now.

At the link, you can find your local newspapers based on ZIP code and send a letter in a form box provided. They do not provide astroturf text, though the site does contain a list of talking points.

  1. Excellent news on the stay! Carter and Tutu? I hope this brings to light some of the unjust ways people suffer from rush-to-judgement and pressured, extorted, really, testimony.

  2. Yes, it is wonderful news, Jack. And I love Jimmy Carter, too.

If I hadn’t lost your earlier comment in the spam trap, I’d have known about this stay hours earlier.

  3. Oh, no worries, Sherry. I thought I had exceeded my limit of posts or something. Just happy I can actually converse on a regular basis with the community here, now that I’ve graduated. It is so great to see Carter making a difference in this world, almost re-defining what “most powerful man in the free world” means. At least, for me.

  4. You graduated, Jack. Congratulations! And best wishes in your future career. May all your prizes be Pulitzers.
