As New Orleans evacuates, on this holiday weekend almost exactly three years after Katrina, I think we should all have the city and its residents in our hearts.

As of 4 a.m., NOAA called Gustav ad Catetory Three hurricane, which is a downgrade. Here, via Tom Watson is a social network of interest on Ning, the Gustav Information Center.

And I think we should contemplate our failure to help the people of New Orleans then and since then. Let us hope that this storm is of lesser magnitude and that the Army Corps of Engineers is right in saying they’re prepared for it.

  1. Sherry, Poet Clare Martin evacuated her home last night. She has asked for prayer.

  2. Perhaps the dikes are in better shape, that was the main culprit (in New Orleans) when Katrina it. Remember the tidal surge in Mississippi, Alabama, and Louisiana too, many communities were wiped out.
They are at least preparing ahead of time, (now that residents are true believers)I would like to see the storm dissipate and just go away before it gets there, but it doesn’t look good. I am sure the Coast Guard is pre-staged and ready to assist, like they were last time. The National Guard has also been called into service (ahead of time).

  3. Max, we are much less appreciative of the Coast Guard than we should be. You guys perform so many services to keep us safe.

Last I heard, sounded like Gustav was calming down a bit. Let us hope.

  4. Thanks, Helen, for the word about Clare. Folks, a reminder if you need it that Clare is one of the Mule‘s Best of the Net nominees. Her blog is here: http://clarelmartin.wordpress.com/

Mule poets become part of the family, for which I am very grateful. Spare a prayer for Clare.
