A nominee
(3)Clare L. Martin, nominated by the Dead Mule School of Southern Literature for inclusion in Sundress’s 2008 Best of the Net anthology, heads her online chapbook, Growing Into Myself, with a wonderful photo of my favorite arachnid, the Golden Garden Spider. So I like her from the get-go.
Here is her Southern Legitimacy Statement:
I live in the Deep Southsouthwest Louisiana. I am a Cajun woman who loves her culture, its traditions, music and food. I am the Gumbo Queen. I make a mean crawfish touffe. I can gut and skin a catfish, play bourre (A Cajun card game) and sing hundred-year old songs in French. I love our coastal wetlands, mossy oaks, Cypress swamps, prairies, muddy bayous and all manner of flora and fauna which thrive in our natural areas, especially those organisms which can be baked, stewed, roasted, fried or fricasseed.
Her nominated poem is “Ice to Water.” You can read it at the link.

Oh my, how your poem “LINES WRITTEN AFTER HEARING W. S. MERWIN READ A POEM ABOUT HIS LAST CONVERSATION WITH HIS FATHER” moved me. It is both beautiful and harrowing. Fine work, Sherry.
Saturday will be the one year anniversary of my father’s passing at 85, so I am especially sensitive to the subject matter.
Thank you for the mention and congratulations to you as well for your fine work and nomination.
