Angela Barker Thomas to read in Portsmouth

Portsmouth, Ohio, does more than kidnap rocks, I’ll have you know. My South Shore correspondent, Charlie Whitt, has sent along this item:

Ye Olde Lantern Restaurant, 601 Second St., Portsmouth will host a new season of poetry on the third Monday of each month beginning Aug. 18, featuring Kentucky poet Angela Barker Thomas. Thomas lives in a cottage near Daniel Boone National Forest in Kentucky, and enjoys traveling, writing, hiking and the company of two cats. Her poetry has appeared in a variety of publications, such as “Pegasus,” “Lucidity,” “Ohio Poetry Day

Those of you who live in the area might want to check this out.

Angela Barker Thomas is some one I feel privileged to call a friend, though I’ll have to admit to a bad case of hair envy. She has this gorgeous head of thick red curling hair that makes me feel as inadequate as Hedda Gabler. (As a fine-haired woman, I’ve always had a great deal of sympathy for Hedda.)

Having retired from a career in the military, Angela now pursues life as a free spirit and poet. She served for several years as the Membership chair for the Kentucky State Poetry Society, where she got our roles in order, got people to actually pay their dues, and increased the membership. She is another of Kentucky’s treasures. That’s how we got to be walking buddies, being two willing to get up early and trek the hiking paths of the state parks where KSPS usually has their meetings.

So go and have a listen.

P.S. Ye Olde Lantern is in the historic district. Maybe you can drop by and visit Indian Rock.

With the magic of chemistry, you too can have red curly hair. :) I myself got a perm just this Thursday, and am very happy with it. Just cause it’s not the “cool” thing to do doesn’t mean you can’t do it if you wanna. I don’t know how well perms work for fine hair, but it’s never too late!!!
