Full Moon with Ground Mist

It’s a lovely August day here in Central Kentucky, sunny with a forecast high of 84. Very temperate for this time of year in this place.

If you live in the area and are looking for something fun to do on such a sunny day, I suggest you go to Leatha Kendrick’s reading at Joseph-Beth Booksellers. She will be reading from her new collection, Second Opinion, from 2:00 - 3:00 p.m. These are cracker-jack poems. My review is here. Andrea’s review is here.

Leatha’s a great poet and a lively reader, so you’ll enjoy the afternoon. Go for lunch or stay for dinner at The Bistro.

Leatha is also a great teacher and I credit her with rejuvenating my career as a poet. About six years ago — wow! can it have been so long — I felt as though I had walked right up to the edge of a sheer cliff in the dark. I was stopped and had no idea how to make the leap from what my poetry was to what I wanted it to be. Along about then I also had my first workshop with Leatha and gradually, with the help of her sure eye and ear, I began to see my way forward. My poetry still isn’t what I think it ought to be. Probably never will be, never should be. Complacency is not a good thing. But I do feel now as though I’m moving forward.

The woman is a gift to poetry in Kentucky.

Before or after you go hear Leatha read, you can drop by the Woodland Art Fair. It’s open 11:00 - 5:00 today. They have 200 artists this year. And some great entertainment.
