Train I ride is 16 coaches long…
(4)
This photograph was taken looking westward with my house creeping up behind, though I can still outrun it. The train you see in the distance is traveling northward. Once it gets to Cynthiana, it follows the Licking River through Harrison, Pendleton, and Kenton Counties over the Ohio River to Cincinnati. Its a freight train. The last passenger train, other than expedition railroads, ran through this part of Kentucky in about 1972. I was in graduate school at the time at the University of Kentucky. I cut classes to ride the last train to Morehead State for a Richie Havens concert.

Now, Sherry, was that the train or the house you can still outrun? (Sorry. Couldn’t resist.)
I think it’s time to get those passenger trains arunnin’ again, don’t you?
And, while we’re at it, let’s have Richie Havens make a comeback, too!
Amen.

Well, Rosalie, considering the current state of my hips, I’m doing well to outrun my house. But you remind me of a story my Mama used to tell me…

Ah, Max, that’s our mailbox, which is a rather strange looking affair because of a local sport involving baseball bats and mailboxes. The land and the fence belongs to our neighbor, though our fences aren’t in much better shape. I used to have half-a-dozen or so of Daddy’s old Angus cows but when I went back to work full time I couldn’t manage them. TR does not do cattle. It hurt me a lot to have to sell the cows but there’s more money in this basement office, not to mention health insurance.
