Ramar of the Jungle
Ramar of the Jungle was a half-hour television adventure, starring Jon Hall and Ray Montgomery, that ran for 52 episodes in 1953 and 1954. It was set in Africa and India. IMDb commenters have written some nice reviews of the series. It was entirely too Rudyard Kipling but I was only nine years old. What did I know about the White Man’s Burden and the evils of colonialism? Although it was filmed in Hollywood, it seemed exotic and I loved the exotic. None of that urbanite Nancy Drew for me. I read Tarzan of the Apes and Zane Grey westerns.

I was in 10th or 11th grade when I read, in our reading book, Shooting An Elephant, which I believe is George Orwell rather than Rudyard Kipling, but it all but came out and said, “Me white man, me have juju to kill wild elephant, save the natives, O woe is I who is expected to protect the natives,” which pulled me in for a day or two until I decided it was out-of-date bunk.
The evils of colonialism are not, as I understand from Kipling and Orwell, that we invade other countries and subjugate them by force, but that we are then expected to stick around and nursemaid our new subjects. O what burdens we bear!

I probably saw all the episodes of Ramar — I think I knew it was not great, but I didn’t care! I too read all the Tarzan books.
Something else I watched on Saturday was “Industry on Parade”. I have only met one other person who admitted watching this show, but I credit it with giving the farm boy a good understanding of manufacturing, and commerce.

Ernie, we have much in common but not, I’m afraid, “Industry on Parade.” I have only the vaguest memory of such a program. Which may explain why I now struggle to find two pennies to rub together.

Tommy, you make me smile but don’t forget exploiting the natural resources of the colony.
