Today Bill Clinton comes to Paris, Kentucky. It’s a closed affair at the Legion Hall, just a mile from my house. Of course, I’m not invited, but still…
Just another extraordinary event in this extraordinary Democratic primary. Historic candidates in a historic race, Fox Newsmen develop a sense of ethics, and Bill Clinton comes to Paris.
A disturbing dream last night. A predator lurked outside the open door. I couldn’t see the beast, didn’t know how close it was. Could I run across the room and shut the door before the thing could pounce?
High winds in the weather forecast.

Clinton was in West Lafayette, IN last night and generated a lot of excitement. I wanted to attend and wasn’t able, but I have always heard it is a treat to hear him speak.

Wow, I guess he eats on the road.
I wonder how many Mattoxes, Coffeys, Bakers, McConnells, Caldwells and the rest of the Paris privileged will be in attendance on Bill today.
Love,
T

Bill was impressive in Frankfort, talking for probably an hour using no notes and a bunch of contrasting statistics. I’m happy to report that there were no obvious swipes at fellow Democrats. Not much mention of McCain, either. Lots of campaigning against Bush and his administration, of course, and positive talk about the superiority of Hillary’s approach to health care, the economy, the Iraq War, and energy independence (with a nod to so-called “clean coal” technology.)
The crowd was lively and enthusiastic for Bill as much as Hillary, it seemed to me. Attendance I’d guess at 4,000 adults and maybe 2,000 high school students.
Clinton stuck around afterwards and, as the hall quickly began to empty, he walked the front row and shook hands, signed placards, and exchanged good-humored pleasantries with those who stayed and got to the front. Even though at his first of four events and running quite late already, he seemed to enjoy this handshaking, etc., as much as anything, and he stayed longer than simple courtesy would have dictated. Outside afterward, I overheard young women and some older ones, too, marveling at the experience. “He looked right at me!” one said. “I thought I’d die,” said another. Their reactions were like that to a rock or movie star.
Bill is still an accomplished campaigner and quite popular. How easily that translates to enthusiasm for Hillary is a big imponderable.

JimT, thanks for the report. I was hoping you’d let us know what it was like. I did experience a bit of a frisson to hear that “clean coal” thing on NPR. But I guess in Kentucky politicians always think they have to bow to King Coal.
Interesting as I drove down Main Street, Paris after work to see “Welcome Bill Clinton” on the Southern States marquis.
But I agree that while Bill may still have the Elvis, it’s sort of a toss-up about his campaign for Hillary. I like that word imponderable.

Deane, I saw Clinton on the Univ Ky campus back in 1996, I think it was, when he was running for his second term. It was in the spring, about this time of year, and the main lawn of campus — the one place they don’t fill up with buildings — was filled with students in a festive mood. He was very charismatic, but it was a bit disquieting to see snipers on the roof of the administration building.
