Five Years

Free Speech in San Diego

From Tales of the Freewayblogger via Skippy

If you look over at my “Today in History” section, you’ll see a list: Two, Three, Four, and now Five Years. I don’t want to see this list grow.

Vigils and Observances:

In Berea:

Solemn Memorial and Vigil for Peace and Reconciliation in Iraq

5:30 - 6:30 p.m. Wednesday March 19th

Steps of Union Church,
corner of Prospect and Scaffoldcane (near the College Square)

March 19th is the 5th Anniversary of the start of the current War in Iraq. To mark the occasion, the Peace and Social Justice Program of Berea College along with the Campus Christian Center are sponsoring a “Solemn Memorial and Vigil for Peace and Reconciliation in Iraq.” There will be music and reflections by invited speakers, including President Shinn. The program’s centerpiece will be a solemn reading of the names of the 63 Kentucky servicemen and servicewomen who have given their lives, as well as a corresponding number of names of Iraqis who have been killed.

Participants are encouraged to bring signs that reflect religious and humanitarian hopes and prayers for peace. In case of rain, the vigil will be held inside Union Church. Please forward this message to others and plan to join us in making this a prayerful and powerful call for an end to this tragic conflict.

In Lexington:

Observe, mourn, protest - the 5th Anniversary of Iraq Invasion

5:30 - 6:30 p.m. Wednesday March 19

Triangle Park
Corner of Main & Broadway
Lexington

Honor the dead. Heal the Wounded. End the War.

Join us as we observe, mourn, and protest on the 5th anniversary of the U.S. invasion of Iraq. We want to go beyond statistics. The statistics are numbing: 3,984 U.S. dead, 29,314 U.S. wounded, at least 100,000 Iraqi civilians dead, and an unknown number of Iraqi insurgents dead.

On the corner we will hold a solemn ceremony focusing on the 63 Kentuckians and 63 randomly selected Iraqi civilians who have died in the war and occupation. To the rhythm of a slow drumbeat, one demonstrator after another will read one of the names and then place a flower on a coffin that is draped with U.S. and Iraqi flags. We will alternate between Kentucky and Iraqi names. After each pair of names is read, we will chant in unison “End this war, No More Killing.” After all these dead are honored, we will end the observance by singing together “Where Have All The Flowers Gone.”

For those who missed it, the rising cost of fuel is yet another sign of a Bush Cheney Mission Accomplished. What mission was that you ask? Why the mission was to create record profits for Bush’s old oil buddies and Cheny’s old corporate buddies. Why do they think the Bush administration went all the way to the supreme court and invoked executive privilege to keep Cheney’s secret deals a secret? So when someone tells you Bush’s legacy is just torture and lying about it you tell them: hogwash. For the first time in history an American president has started a war for the sole purpose of raising corporate and oil profits and it worked! There’s your legacy! In my humble opinion.

That sign is incredibly powerful. Amazing how something so sad can be so powerfully energizing. Rise up, America! It is time.

If you can remove my last post I’d appreciate it. It came out kind of dumb. thanks max

I like the springtime view of your red-winged blackbird.

I did that, Max, with regret. I thought it was intelligent and passionate and I liked it.

    Would you consider a do-over??

Thanks about the blackbird. I didn’t think I got him — I figured he got out of lens-range before I snapped. Not prize-winning quality but kind of fun.

June has 2 or 3 bird feeders out, and diligently feed the birds. Many types come to the feeder; in particular blue birds this time of year. We have some bird houses around the property, thanks to the previous owner. I recently worked the pastures for the horse, I’m surprised the birds aren’t picking the seed from the field.

    SO
During an interview Vice President Cheney was told that 70% of the American Public thought it was a bad idea to invade Iraq. The VP’s statement was SO, (stating So What).
Now that more statements (Pentagon) confirm there were No Weapons of Mass Destruction at all. Attempt at damage control to shut up Joe Wilson through (Valerie Plame). How man others have you quieted by whatever means?

    SO
Mr. VP, where were you when your country called for troops (Vietnam); result 5 time deferred from military service.

    SO
Mr. VP, what does Support the troops mean, give them more War? (As if they really want it) War is frankly about death, now nearly 4,000 American Soldiers lives. Many more have been maimed, and others emotionally damaged for the remainder of their life. Families have been displaced, children raised without one of their parents. It appears that this doesn’t keep you up at night.

    SO
Mr. VP, I suspect soldiers see this administration (you) has misused them. Your lies for their Lives.

    SO
Mr. VP, what does Conservative mean, empty the US treasury for Saddam Hussein, with the endorsement of 5 so called Evangelical leaders?

    SO
Mr. VP, believe it or not, Iraqis are people too, many have unnecessarily died from your misguided policies.

    SO
Mr. VP, this list goes on and on and on.

    SO ………………
    America VOTE.

All republicans supported and continue to support those NeoCon policies. We need bigger majorities in the Congress and Senate to properly manage this fiasco.

Vote a Democratic Ticket. Get rid of them all, put responsible people in office at all levels.
