Roe v. Wade

Today marks the 35th anniversary of the Roe v. Wade decision. In my opinion, it was a good decision.

My thinking about abortion is very pragmatic. I’ve said that here before and I’ll say it again: women have always had abortions, women always will have abortions. The question is whether you value women enough to let them have safe, legal abortions.

Recently the abortion rate has been going down in the United States. Common sense says this is because much better birth control is available and it is available across the economic/class spectrum. Unfortunately, anti-choice fanatics are now attacking birth control as a form of abortion.

Because these people don’t seem to value babies enough to make sure all mothers can get good prenatal care, to make sure all babies/children get good health care and a good education, I have no idea what they do want except to exercise their power to control people’s lives.

A number of women are treating this subject on weblogs today. Of those, I think the most important one to take note of is Miss Laura at the Daily Kos.

I find it inspiring that the need for the abortion is lessening. I don’t know if it’s from the current administration of teaching abstinence is the reason. I also read that perhaps the availability to the procedure has been lessened in some states.

But I do support the decision of Roe vs Wade as it was written in the first decision paper, first trimester, but provisions should (and are) be in place for extraordinary circumstances. The utmost privacy should be maintained in this process, it’s hard enough for someone to make this decision and it should be without reprisal or persecution.

I also find it interesting, that the (most) adamant opponents are elderly men. I would not want to return this procedure to the Coat Hangars. Let’s at least keep it safe.

I am glad for the drop in abortions. I’d like to credit increased use of contraception, but I am not sure if that will continue. Bush’s abstinence education emphasizes failure rates of contraception to the point that it seems they are saying you’re more likely to get pregnant if you’re using contraception. I think this is going to result in a certain group of young people who’ll take this disinformation to heart but won’t listen to the larger message of “don’t have sex.”

So I’ll likely see more custody battles involving parents who are minors themselves.

    Those break my heart.
