August
August 9, 1972 was my last official day of schooling and it was also the day on which I got married. Time flies.
Over at Eyewear, Todd Swift has posted an encomium to August that I suggest you read in full — and the photo is pretty nice too:
The semi-mythic month of August has arrived. April may be cruel, but August is vast, vacant, quiet, deserted, even slightly dusty. August is an empty Paris of the mind, where one can wander shuttered streets at noon, and meet no one. August is when parliament is out, and the fish are jumping onto the banks of the river. August is when you realise you have wasted your life, then turn over in the hammock for another forty winks…
Dog Days ends officially on August 11, I think, possibly on the 17th. Maybe then the heat will break. Today though, the prediction is that the temperature will hit 97 degrees Fahrenheit. I have some slow and easy celebrating to do, probably involving icy drinks and shade.

Thanks, Terry & Helen, for the anniversary wishes. Helen, if my fingers serve me well, it’s been 37 years since you were a June bride. Congratulations to you! No wonder you can’t remember graduation.
We’ve been doing a sort of low-key long-weekend celebration, interrupted as our anniversaries always seem to be, by household emergencies: this year a 17-year-old window air conditioner that decided it just couldn’t take the heat. Try to find an ac in a heat wave—
