Travelogue 3

Home! Enjoying my first good cup of coffee in 5 days. My quest for a cup of any kind of coffee today was enough to make a statue weep.

I got my books home all right — not over weight. In the end, I didn’t mail them to myself because I was daunted by the logistics of finding a post office and a mailer on Saturday when everything on campus was shut down (it’s summer session) and downtown was five blocks away. Anyway it was a bonding and busy day and I didn’t want to interrupt it.

I will have more to say about my experience I’m sure but right now I think it’s time for a nap. I got up at 3:30 to catch a shuttle to the airport at 4:30 and I’ve been on the road ever since.

P.S. One very nice thing about West Chester is that they make sure everybody has a shuttle ride to the airport or train station, no matter how early the connection. The assistant director of the program herself drove us at 4:30 this morning.

P.P.S. The Ohio River Valley looks very droughty from the air. The trees look all right but the pastures/hay fields look thin and colorless. It was a bit distressing to look upon.

    NEEDIN RAIN

Willie said, “John, if we don’t get some rain purty soon
There ain’t goin to be no corn crop ,Or tobacca neither.
See how the corn blades are startin to curl up?
That’s just one step away from dyin.”

“They’re all gatherin over at the meetin house tonight
To pray for rain. Me, I think I’ll just pack my valise
And head up to Lake Erie for a few days.
I can’t stand to sit and watch the corn turn brown…

And I don’t want to be here for no danged flood neither,”

From WILLIE TALKS, a collection by Charlie W.

Welcome, and yes, it’s very dry here in Greenup County

Hedging his bets, that Willie. Thanks, Charlie. It’s really good to be back here, dry or not. I’m home today listening to the oriole and the mockingbird instead of the hum of air conditioners and the drone of scholars. (That last phrase irresistible for the rhetoric but not necessarily literally (ahem) true.)

Yeah, ‘overpraying’ can be a problem.
