Standing on the MountainAnother of the fortunate arrivals in my mailbox this winter, Standing on the Mountain is a limited edition publication to commemorate the thirtieth anniversary of MACED, the Mountain Association for Community Economic Development in Berea.

It’s a handsome volume printed on heavy cream stock and best of all it contains work from some of my favorite Kentucky poets: Gail Chandler, Steve Rhodes, Dory Hudspeth, and Sam Martin (to name a few).

Sam (who has a fox for his muse) has graciously given me permission to reproduce one of his poems here:

    Sojourns

    After your daughter’s funeral
    death changes
    from cold casket
    disturbed earth

    to undisturbed earrings
    in the oak jewelry box
    you were proud to carve

    to the fishing trip
    just the two of you
    took to celebrate
    her fourteenth birthday
but the fish would not bite
    so you hiked
    through the springtime woods
    and you laughed
    and laughed
    at a fawn
    when it tripped
    on a broken branch
    you knew
    nothing else
    to do

    — Sam L. Martin

More like that in the book, which sells for $8.00, including shipping. Kristin Stratten of MACED tells me they are just covering costs at that price. To get your copies, call 859-986-2373 or email info@maced.org.

A sidenote: Dory Hudspeth’s first collection of poems, Enduring Wonders, has just been released by WordTech Editions. Follow the link to learn more. Or read some sample poems here.

What I'm Doing...

  • Wrapped in fleece, I watch the female cardinal's soundless foraging through glass lowered like a curtain to close the year's second act. 1 day ago
  • I pull a blanket to my chin and snuggle in for a second nap the 4th morning of September. A single cricket sings in the distance. 2 days ago
  • The robins have shut up. After weeks of obtreperous dawn chatter, the silence is eerie. I check to be sure my neighbors are still here. 3 days ago
  • Daunting, in my black orthopedics, to cross campus behind a blond co-ed in Daisy Dukes, jazz drive lanyard fluttering from her hip pocket. 4 days ago
  • Balance: I follow a small sedan through city traffic, a Jesus fish to the left of its license plate, a Darwin fish to the right. 1 week ago
  • Black cables, a gray sky, a pink balloon bouncing on a white string. 1 week ago
