Buy Nothing Christmas
As part of my ongoing rebellion against the North American way of Christmas, may I recommend that you celebrate a Buy Nothing Christmas.
Buy Nothing Christmas is a national initiative started by Canadian Mennonites who offer a prophetic “no” to the patterns of over-consumption of middle-class North Americans. They are inviting Christians (and others) all over Canada to join a movement to de-commercialize Christmas and re-design a Christian lifestyle that is richer in meaning, smaller in impact upon the earth, and greater in giving to people less-privileged.
If you want to see how this credo has affected people’s lives, you can read the Stories of Buy Nothing Christmas or you can peruse the Buy Nothing Catalogue.
There is also a more secular Christmas Resistance Movement and new american dream’s Holiday Survival Kit.
When you tell people you don’t do Christmas, they tend to treat you like you need a big dose of Xanax. Surely you don’t mean it. There must be something wrong with you. Unfortunately, this is especially true of family.
And of course, in the United States, it is considered tantamount to treason not to shop. Our president told us so. If I were a cynic, I’d say his oil riches depend on it.
But I’m here to tell you that it can be a great relief to opt out.
Thanks to Billy the Blogging Poet for letting me know I’m not alone.
