Cats in the National Enquirer, a cat caught with feather

Cats of War
Cats are living on Mars,
the National Enquirer tells me.
Strange, angular cats with fur pulled tight
over their bones like the children of famine.
At home my cat refuses to eat,
even when my son rattles her dish.
Perhaps she has leukemia. Perhaps
she doesn’t like Purina Cat Chow.
Perhaps she eats just enough
in the middle of the night
to sustain herself and yet make us worry.
I step in front of the magazine rack
so my son will not see the creepy cats
from Mars. After the Rover took their picture,
no doubt they peed on it and tore
at the delicate instruments with claws
no human hand has ever dared to trim.

Bert, after he caught & killed a sparrow of some kind but found it too fluffy to try to eat. Peanut came to his assistance and finished every last little bit, leaving just a sad little pile of feathers.

I woke up on Sunday morning dreaming about trying to find one of our cats, only to remember in my sleep-fogged state that she had died last September. That was a bad day.

Tommy — a good friend recently told me that dreams about pets are usually dreams about some aspect of our own psyche. In this case, though, the dream may also be a form of grieving.
