November 22, 1963

That date, far more than September 11, 2001, is the one that changed the world for me. I was 18 years old when John F. Kennedy was shot. I had not been old enough to vote for him. But I had been just the right age to fall in love with him and his version of Camelot. I could still read romance novels in those days too — and dream of Prince Charming.

The death of Prince Charming is inevitable in any young woman’s life, but he does not often have his head shattered by a bullet.

Oh, Sherry. I lived your post. In my cedar chest, along with my sweaters, is the 1960 Kennedy poster, complete with lipstick from the kisses I used to give him nightly. I was 13. Then, in Algebra my junior year of high school, we got the news that he’d been shot. News of his death came during Chemistry.
