Kitchen Surprise

Though it’s not a surprise really. It’s what I’m apt to find in my oven two weeks before the annual KGAC Fall Fair in Berea. And has been these last 20 years (which may be how long it’s been since I’ve cleaned the oven — don’t tell anybody.)
Gearing up to be a busy two weeks here on Ruddles Mill Road as hubby turns our kitchen into a steaming/drying room for spoons and I make final preparations for the annual meeting of the Kentucky State Poetry Society. Both fall on October 13, 14, 15.
So posting may be light and absent-minded.
All in a good cause. I hope you’ll come join us at one event or the other.

Artisans are a weird bunch. Jo, a weaver, keeps cat food in her oven. Carole keeps dyer’s mushrooms in the refrigerator. Charlie, a basketmaker, has damp hickory bark in the refrigerator. I keep daylily and hosta leaves in my freezer. TR’s spoons don’t surprise me. He’s just one of us. Maybe that’s why I like him so much.

I feel flattered to be included among the artisans by Virginia, who has become more of an artist than an artisan.
I regularly clean our oven before I load it with spoons by the way. Would like a larger microwave so I could fit in more stock per drying though. That is what the spoons are doing in the oven–it’s a handy drying/cooling rack for green stock after the quick kiln method.
