Ah, Mahler…

How long the winter has lasted — like a Mahler
symphony, or an hour in the dentist’s chair.

— Jane Kenyon, from “Walking Alone in Late Winter,” Collected Poems (Greywolf Press, 2005)

Poor Mahler - compared to a root canal! He’s one of my favorites. :)

Hey, Terry! I only “know” two Mahler symphonies, which is to say I own copies of the first and the third. The third I like. The first, not so much. But sometimes that is a matter of performance. I always thought I was bored by Gershwin’s “Rhapsody in Blue” — thought it a sort of pseudo-jazz — until I heard the performance with Leonard Bernstein conducting and playing the piano. That performance reached me, made me feel I understood what Gershwin was trying to do.

The first symphony I fell in love with was the 4th, when I heard it performed locally. For a recording, I highly recommend Bernstien. The 7th comes close in my affections. Pretty much, I like them all. :)
