It’s OK to Love the 60s
from the Feel-Like-I’m-Fixin-to-Die Rag
Well, come on mothers throughout the land,
Pack your boys off to Vietnam.
Come on fathers, don’t hesitate,
Send ‘em off before it’s too late.
Be the first one on your block
To have your boy come home in a box.
And it’s one, two, three
What are we fighting for ?
Don’t ask me, I don’t give a damn,
Next stop is Vietnam.
And it’s five, six, seven,
Open up the pearly gates,
Well there ain’t no time to wonder why,
Whoopee! we’re all gonna die.
Joanie’s comment reminds me that I should remind you of the flag exhibit, History Unfurled, at the Thomas D. Clark Center for Kentucky History. Although Joanie has gone off up north to The Museum of America and the Sea at Mystic Seaport, Connecticut, she was at the History Center to put this exhibit together. A consideration of the flag in all its glory and shame might be a good-enough way to spend a hot Fourth of July. The Center is air conditioned ;).

Hi, Sherry,
Don’t forget John Pryne’s “Your Flag Decal Won’t Get You Into Heaven Anymore.” It’s also about Vietnam, and chillingly close to our most recent war, especially in the increased use of bumper stickers. It turns our Pryne (if I’m spelling his name correctly) has a KY connection, so I brought the song text to the attention of the Flag exhibit curator at KHS (whilst I was still there), and now it’s in the temporary exhibit!
PS–I promise to write a longer email later–I miss everyone, too!

But your flag decal won’t get you
Into Heaven any more.
They’re already overcrowded
From your dirty little war.
Now Jesus don’t like killin’
No matter what the reason’s for,
And your flag decal won’t get you
Into Heaven any more.

Hey Joanie! Thank you for reminding me of John Prine. I think he’s a genius (pretty close to but not surpassing Dylan) and his “Angel from Montgomery” is one of the best American songs ever. This verse, in particular, makes me tear up every time I hear it:
Not to mention that Kentucky anthem, Paradise
