Coincidence

according to Northrop Frye is “the name we give to a piece of design when we cannot find a use for it.”

And of course, Sherlock Holmes (or maybe it was Hercule Poirot) said there’s no such thing as coincidence.

I have quite a bit of coincidence in my life, as I explained in this post last year. Not quite meaningless but not quite serendipity. I like the idea that it may be a piece of design that I haven’t found a use for — yet. Like Gin Petty, I save all the bits and pieces.

Frankly, I don’t see how anyone can throw anything away. That much said, if I keep much more, we may have to build a barn.
