Just Like Old Times? Not really

At Coretta Scott King’s six hour funeral yesterday. Think about that. Six hours.

At Coretta Scott King’s six hour funeral yesterday–

  • The Reverend Joseph Lowery said something like: “We know now there were no weapons of mass destruction over there. But Coretta knew and we know that there are weapons of misdirection right down here. Millions without health insurance. Poverty abounds. For war billions more but no more for the poor.” He got cheers and a standing O. Video here and here.
  • Jimmy Carter mentioned the FBI’s wiretaps on the Kings. (Video here, thanks to Terry for the tip.)
  • Bill Clinton spoke long and without notes.
  • Maya Angelou mentioned her work for equality of women and gays, her work for peace.
  • Stevie Wonder sang “His Eye Is on the Sparrow” with more melismas than I’d have thought possible.

and all I saw on the Six O’Clock News, the Ten O’Clock News, were soundbites of George W. Bush.

    Thanks, Terry.

I was at a site yesterday that had most of the videos and then I couldn’t retrace my steps and find it again. If I do, I’ll put the link up here.

It occurred to me that the right is trying to do to this funeral what they did so successfully to Paul Wellstone’s back in 2002 but it’s my hope that times have changed enough that they fail this time.

    Two possibilities —

    1. The liberal media is not so liberal as we’ve been led to believe.

    2. The media exercised the good taste and respect for Coretta that was lacking in those who spoke about war, politics, and their own special interests.
