New Links

I’d like to draw your attention to some new links I’ve added over on the left:

ArtCroft

ArtCroft is an artists’ retreat space on 400 hilly, wooded acres in rural Nicholas County. Kentucky. Artcroft’s mission is to provide direct support to the artist and the community. The residency program allows literary and visual artists a rural and serene environment in which to work creatively without distractions. Support to the community is via arts programming, collaborations, small venue presentations, and partnerships.

I was lucky enough to have a lunch at ArtCroft on New Year’s Eve with Robert and Maureen Barker and their board of directors. I came away filled with enthusiasm for this wonderful endeavor. You will, I hope, be hearing more about this adventure in the coming year.

Hats and Veils

A few years ago, I spent a year on the board of Lexington Art League’s Fourth Friday committee. That was where I met Polly Singer, who was LAL’s Executive Director at that time. Polly’s working in her first love now – millenery design. Here’s a little snippet from About Our Designer:

Polly Singer’s designs mix New York style with Bluegrass tradition. Prior to starting her own business, she worked in New York in the entertainment industry with such acts as U2 and Harry Connick, Jr. Polly also worked at J. Peterman, as well as Radio City Hall in New York. Singer was most recently Executive Director of The Lexington Art League.

Every woman can wear a hat, says Polly.

New Southerner

New Southerner describes itself thus: “… a bimonthly magazine of literary journalism about Southern people, places and issues. We encourage readers to live a more meaningful, self-sufficient life through thought-provoking and instructive articles on good stewardship of our land, conservation of natural resources, neighborliness and support of local communities. We also highlight visual art and literature that show appreciation of these values in Southern culture.”

I’ve been quoting from New Southerner rather extensively lately. It’s a great new publication, and they’re open to submissions. Follow the link for guidelines.
