It’s a question all of us of a certain age can answer.
Yesterday was the 42nd anniversary of JFK’s assassination. On this day in 1963 and for two more days, until Kennedy was buried, I stayed on the sofa crying and watching television. I saw Johnson sworn in. I saw Oswald shot, though I didn’t really understand at the time what I’d seen or how this television coverage would change the way we all viewed the world. I did not, of course, see the Zapruder film. That didn’t come to light for some time thereafter.
I was 18 years old. No event before or after ever affected me quite like this one did.
Once upon a time, this anniversary was well-marked but this year I noticed that few people mentioned it. For that reason, I’m grateful for Georgia Green Stamper’s column this week . It goes some way toward explaining how things changed. It’s well worth taking the time to read.

Awake this morning, for the first time in a long time, with nothing much I want to say and distracted by the fact that I have cooking to do.
This quiz has been sitting in my drafts since June. I’m not sure now where I picked it up.
American Cities That Best Fit You: |
60% Atlanta
60% Chicago
60% Philadelphia
55% Austin
55% Honolulu
Pretty much all over the map, huh?
I add up about 290% here, so I won’t be using this quiz as an argument to leave the farm. I’ve lived in Chicago for about six years but have only visited Atlanta and Philadelphia, never been to Austin or Honolulu. Of the five, I think I liked Philadelphia best. Maybe it was the open sort of European design, or the Penn Station market, or maybe the park along the Schuylkill River …
I like Boston, too.
