On Weekend Edition this morning, Scott Simon read an excerpt from Under the Left Breast of the Century, Radovan Karadzic ’s new collection of poetry. Although Karadzic is in hiding and no one seems to be able to bring him to justice, he still managed to get this book published.
The poetry is as bad as you might expect it to be. Why do these horrible men — Karadzic, Saddam Hussein — think they’re poets?
At the end of the segment, however, Simon played a bit in a different voice. Whereas the first reading had been about snail slime and hate and crushing things, the second bit was about love, rain and umbrellas, and heads on shoulders.
What is this, I thought? Karadzic in self-pitying mode?
Then Simon’s voice came back. “Rod McKuen,” he said, “a real poet.”
Talk about elitists against populists.
Do you think Simon had his tongue in his cheek?
