I guess we moderns don’t have a monopoly on carnage.
According to the NYTimes, today is the anniversary of the Civil War battle of Antietam in which 23,100 soldiers were killed.
Even after the bloody 20th century and the beginning of the bloodier 21st, I find that number incomprehensible.
