I’ve been meanng for a while to do a short review of the new Wavelength magazine. But I’ve decided the best way to give you an idea of its flavor is to quote a little from its 38 pages of poetry (31 poets from about 18 states). So here goes.
They don’t even pick them up—
Scuffed copper from the apartment parking lot,
Landmark grocery parking lot,
Down 5th street
where the affluent college students stroll,
Stagger and search their pockets
For smokes, bills and credit cards,
The poor pennies fall.
I pick them up
Hoping my luck will change…
— Hal J. Daniel III, from “Picking Up Pennies”
Ho-hum, Another God
descending from the sky in a time
of plagues and sore furrows.
Okay, what is it now?
I mean, all we want is instant
and benevolent immortality…
— James Doyle, from “Ho-hum, Another God”
…Once I opened an hourglass to set time free,
and the first grain scraped by me laughing.
So I caught the rest and held them
like the wistful faces in an Edward Hopper painting
and released only one each year
when their crying begged me.
— Catherine Moran, from “Open and Closed”
