Scene with Orphan and Mother
Mark Brown is one of the poets who’ll be reading at Fauntleroy’s tomorrow at 5:30 – see the post below. Here is a poem from Mark that originally appeared in Wind Magazine.
Scene with Orphan and Mother
The grime around my neck
built up for years before you came:
“Surprise! I’m here.”
The dirt sat thick on toys and icons.
Your image thin and brittle in the frame.
I cried no tears when you knocked down
St. Jude’s door, all smiles and open arms.
For years, your astral form hovered
in my soup bowl, and now, I will not nurse
on your dry tit.
I slept in the bosom of knotty old nuns–
or lay awake on parchment sheets,
feared the priest with his candy bar
come-ons. My heart pumped no love.
I am dry. I live like a monk.
What need do I have for kisses and hugs?
I don’t love and you can go home.
Remove your barbwire arms
from around my dead sea heart.
No link exists between
your whiskey flask and me.
I came of age in black and white;
your color makes me flinch.
