Southern Girl Who Reads Too Much

Here’s another quiz that was making the rounds a couple of weeks ago – I’m always right on top of these things.

Well, actually, I’ve been saving it for a day when I don’t have anything much on my mind and that day has come.

The quiz is probably pretty accurate. It’s based on only 20 questions and some of them I was iffy about. But 1/3 Dixie and 2/3 midwestern standard probably reflects my base dialect watered down by my two decades of education and my training as an Editor in the Life Sciences. I’m not sure where the 10% Yankee comes from. I was in Boston once for a weekend —

Your Linguistic Profile:

55% General American English
30% Dixie
10% Yankee
5% Midwestern
0% Upper Midwestern
What Kind of American English Do You Speak?

Well, I came out 60% General, 20% Dixie, and 20% Yankee.

I guess that trip to New Yahk in 8th grade really rubbed off.

I notice that the test does not account for foreign English influences. I think my years of British literature, from Narnia to Hogwarts, from Gallifrey to Red Dwarf, should have influenced my particular speech idia.
