Thanks to Charlie Hughes of Wind Publications for this link to the poem written by the British poet laureate Andrew Motion on the occasion of the wedding of Prince Charles and Camilla Parker-Bowles.
You may remember that the poem had been the cause of some speculation in the NYTimes. We are pleased to note that Mr. Motion resisted the temptation to rhyme “Camilla” with “flotilla” and that he did not mention the hats.

Here’s another quiz that was making the rounds a couple of weeks ago – I’m always right on top of these things.
Well, actually, I’ve been saving it for a day when I don’t have anything much on my mind and that day has come.
The quiz is probably pretty accurate. It’s based on only 20 questions and some of them I was iffy about. But 1/3 Dixie and 2/3 midwestern standard probably reflects my base dialect watered down by my two decades of education and my training as an Editor in the Life Sciences. I’m not sure where the 10% Yankee comes from. I was in Boston once for a weekend —
Your Linguistic Profile: |
55% General American English
30% Dixie
10% Yankee
5% Midwestern
0% Upper Midwestern
