Altered Books

Ruth Bavetta, Gin Petty, and I have been having an e-conversation about altered books. Ruth has been doing some wonderful altering herself and mostly she finds these intriguing sites and Gin and I say oooo and aaahhh. But I have also been pointed to some si(gh)tes by the visual poet Geof Huth.

Here are some places I’ve discovered or been shown in the last week or so that you might find worth taking a look at:

Science and the Artist’s Book at the Smithsonian
Tom Phillips’s A Humament
Dan Waber’s Altered Books
Judith Perry’s (I think) Altered Books Gallery
Doris Cross’s Kaldron 16

and for some intelligent discussion of visual poetry

Geoff Huth’s dbqp in general and his discussion of Doris Cross’s work in particular.

And while you’re playing with the visual aspect of text, you might have fun with The Alphabet Synthesis Machine, a creation quirky enough to have been sent me by Donna Marder but I actually found this link on Geof’s page here. I spent about 5 minutes making an alphabet that I called “Joe.” It’s there somewhere in the archive but not worth searching for. It was Friday, I was tired.

Have fun! I’m off to the chaise in the back yard to read my mystery. It’s Mother’s Day morning after all, and looks to be fair and springtime lush here in Kentucky. Maybe I’ll find the gift of a poem.
