Jean Tucker

First View of MesolonghiGeorge Gordon, Lord Byron died at Mesolonghi, Greece on April 19, 1824. He had gone there to help the Greeks in their fight for independence from the Ottoman Empire. On Friday, April 8, Jean Tucker is reading from her new book of poems, First View of Mesolonghi (Grex Press) at Carmichael’s Books, 2720 Frankfort Avenue, Louisville. The bill also includes former Kentucky poet laurate, James Baker Hall. This reading, which begins at 7:00 p.m., features two of the best poets and readers of poetry I know. Don’t miss it.

Irakleion, After Siesta

The old town wakes up
a curtain at a time.

A few guitar notes
float from a balcony,
land in a pool of water
where the flower vendor
scrubs the cobblestones in front of her shop.

Neighbors open thier shutters,
calling to one another.

A man in a peach-colored shirt
spot paints a roof overhang
with a brush on a long pole.

At first I think he has one gold earring,
but then I see
it is only the sun
glinting off his earlobe.
